Auf dem Moers Festival 2009 lockten die Musiker Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis und Roscoe Mitchell unter dem Namen THE TRIO. Die drei Musiker sind in Moers bestens bekannt: Muhal Richard Abrams war 1977 mit Anthony Braxton hier, der Saxofonist Roscoe Mitchell spielte 1977, 1978, 1980 und 1984 in Moers und George Lewis Posaune war bereits neun Mal beim Moers Festival zu hören.
Muhal Richard Abrams baute in den 60er Jahren mit Roscoe Mitchell und anderen Musikern das legendäre Advancement of Creative Music auf und George Lewis ist ebenfalls Mitglied der AACM. Der Auftritt des Trios gehörte zu den Höhepunkten des Festivals.
